If the candidate’s next step is discipleship, the church’s end of that is to provide good mentoring. We strongly recommend tapping into an under-used and hugely valuable resource of returning missionaries for this purpose. Those who have themselves been on the field are equipped with experience – they know what culture shock feels like from the inside and the resources that are needed to endure for the long haul. Other kinds of mentoring might be needed as well, depending on the age and experience of the candidate – financial management; pastoral care; leading Bible studies or hosting small groups. Many important skills can be picked up in the course of normal church life.
